Airworthiness Directive (AD)
A legally mandatory FAA notice requiring inspection, repair, or modification of an aircraft, engine, or component to correct an unsafe condition.
In practice
ADs are not suggestions - compliance is required for airworthiness, on the timeline the AD specifies (one-time, recurring by hours, or by calendar). Tracking them across a shared fleet is classic silent-failure territory: everyone assumes someone else checked. A compliance record per tail number, with recurring ADs on the same clock as inspections, is the difference between a paperwork exercise and a grounded-airplane surprise.
