The annual is the calendar heartbeat of ownership: the airplane is legally unairworthy the first day of the month after it lapses, regardless of how it is running. Shared aircraft add a coordination layer - downtime scheduling, cost splitting, and making sure the schedule actually blocks the airplane once the deadline passes rather than trusting everyone to remember.
