Part 61 vs Part 141

The two US regulatory frameworks for flight training: Part 61 (flexible, instructor-driven) and Part 141 (FAA-approved structured curriculum).

In practice

Part 61 lets any CFI train anywhere with flexible sequencing - ideal for independent instructors and clubs. Part 141 requires an approved syllabus, standards, and oversight in exchange for lower minimum hours and eligibility for certain benefits (VA funding, some visas). For a school the choice is strategic: 141 unlocks markets and rigor but adds administrative weight; many schools run both tracks side by side.
